Whitesands project

Work continues to progress across the Whitesands Project area, with a number of key milestones planned over the coming months.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has completed the purchase of the Bazaar/Whitesands Car Park site in Dumfries, marking an important milestone in the delivery of the Whitesands Project.

Bringing the site into council ownership will support the next stages of the project and help deliver the long-term vision for Whitesands and the River Nith.

A range of preparatory works and investigations have been taking place across the Whitesands Project area following the project's official ground-breaking earlier this summer.

These activities are helping to ensure construction can progress safely and efficiently as work continues on the flood protection scheme and associated improvements.

Residents, businesses and visitors will be able to continue using Loreburn Bridge for most of the Greensands construction programme following a review of construction plans by the Whitesands Project Team.

The revised approach means Loreburn Bridge is now expected to remain open throughout the majority of Phase 1 works, with a closure currently anticipated for a maximum of around four weeks in early 2027 rather than for the full construction period.

Residents and businesses recently joined members of the Whitesands Project team at a community engagement event held at the Whitesands Project Information Centre.

The event provided an opportunity for people to learn more about the project, discuss planned works and ask questions directly to members of the project team.

We recognise how important the Greensands area is to the community, including its trees and natural environment, and we understand that changes to this space are of significant interest.
