Loreburn Bridge walking and cycling diversion
Since the start of construction works, access to the rear of the school has been closed and will remain until approximately April 2027. The closure is required to ensure the safety of pupils, families, staff, members of the public and construction workers while the area operates as an active construction site.
The project team has been working closely with the school to ensure safe alternative routes remain available. For most of the construction period, the Millennium Bridge will remain open, allowing pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users to travel via Nith Avenue and George Street. The bridge is expected to close for a period of around four weeks in early 2027, with further information provided in advance of that closure.
Keeping children and families safe
Safety remains the primary consideration throughout the project.
The rear access route cannot safely remain open during this phase of the works because it falls within, or close to, the construction area. Closing the route helps protect pupils, families and school staff while allowing the project to progress safely.
The school and the Whitesands Project Team understand these changes may be inconvenient and are committed to working together to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Travel, parking and drop-off arrangements
Parents and carers are encouraged to use nearby public car parks, including those on George Street and Gordon Street, when travelling to the school.
Where appropriate, the school car park may be used for drop-offs at the front gates.
Families are asked to allow extra time for journeys, follow any temporary signage and avoid parking or stopping in locations that could obstruct residents, school transport, emergency vehicles or construction traffic.
Support for families
The school recognises that some pupils may require additional support as a result of the changes.
Families whose children have mobility needs, medical conditions, additional support needs, anxiety, sensory requirements or other individual circumstances are encouraged to contact the school directly. Staff will work with families on a case-by-case basis to identify appropriate support arrangements.
Current crossing patrol and supervision arrangements will continue to be reviewed as the project progresses. Should any additional measures be introduced, such as walking buses or enhanced supervision, parents and carers will be informed in advance.
Looking ahead
The closure of the rear school access is temporary and linked to the delivery of Phase 1 of the flood protection scheme.
Once Phase 1 is complete, access through the new flood wall via a flood gate is expected to be available. Further information about future access arrangements and later phases of the project will be shared as plans are finalised.
