River Nith Enhancements

There are five coordinated projects designed to improve flood resilience, transport, public spaces and environmental quality along the River Nith corridor in Dumfries.

Overview

The River Nith programme is made up of five different projects:

  • Whitesands Flood Protection Scheme
  • The upstream environmental enhancement project
  • Whitesands active travel project
  • Bus reconfiguration project
  • Dockhead junction refurbishment

The projects are being coordinated through a one programme approach to support coordinated communications and engagement with stakeholders – consistent messaging, greater effectiveness and efficiency.

Importantly it also provides opportunities for coordinated design and implementation of the projects themselves, which has a number of benefits: a “dig once” principle as far as possible to align major construction projects between services and across agencies and is also likely to improve the likelihood of success for bids for potential funding opportunities.

Delivery of the five projects will:

  • enhance and protect historic buildings and townscape
  • enhance river frontage and corridor
  • enhance green and public spaces where a wide range of activities can be enjoyed by all
  • provide inclusive streets and spaces that are accessible for all with a safe attractive pedestrianised environment
  • provide active travel infrastructure that encourages walking and cycling
