Construction activity continues across the Whitesands project area

A range of preparatory works and investigations have been taking place across the Whitesands Project area following the project's official ground-breaking earlier this summer.

These activities are helping to ensure construction can progress safely and efficiently as work continues on the flood protection scheme and associated improvements.

Preparing for construction

As part of the current phase of work, condition surveys have been completed at nearby properties. These surveys provide a baseline record before major construction activities begin and help identify any site-specific requirements that may need to be considered during the works.

A new access ramp has also been created between the George Street car park and Greensands to support construction activity and improve access to the work area.

Piling works associated with the construction of the new flood protection wall are scheduled to begin later this month.

Access and travel arrangements

To allow flood wall construction to take place safely, the Buccleuch Street Bridge underpass and the Park Lane route to the town centre remain closed.

Clearly signed diversion routes are available via Nith Avenue and Buccleuch Street Bridge, including access to the Whitesands bus stop.

These arrangements help protect both the public and construction teams while work is being carried out and will remain under regular review as the project progresses.

Environmental improvements taking shape

Construction of the flood protection infrastructure has required the removal of 19 trees from within the project area.

As part of the wider scheme, these will be replaced with 40 new semi-mature native trees, more than doubling the number affected by the works.

The new planting will include species such as alder, silver birch and willow, helping to support biodiversity, enhance habitats and strengthen the riverside environment for future generations.

All tree works have been undertaken in line with environmental requirements and have been informed by ecological surveys and inspections.

Looking ahead

Once completed, the Greensands area will benefit from extensive landscaping and replanting, improved pedestrian links between Greensands, George Street and Nith Avenue, and retained and additional car parking spaces.

Together with the new flood protection infrastructure, these improvements will help create a more attractive, accessible and resilient riverside environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
