Looking ahead: next steps for the Whitesands Project
Work continues to progress across the Whitesands Project area, with a number of key milestones planned over the coming months.
A further update on project progress, upcoming construction activity and next steps will be presented to councillors at a meeting of the Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee in September.
The report will provide elected members with an opportunity to review progress to date and consider the next stages of delivery, while helping keep residents, businesses and stakeholders informed as work continues.
Phase 1 at a glance
Construction of Phase 1 will be delivered in two main stages, with work taking place at Greensands followed by Nith Avenue.
Stage 1: Greensands
September 2026 to March 2027
Key activities include:
- removal of existing walls and site preparation works
- construction of flood walls and retaining walls
- installation of drainage infrastructure
- installation of glass flood panels, floodgates and removable barriers
- testing of the completed flood protection system
- resurfacing, hard landscaping and site reinstatement
This stage will provide the core flood protection infrastructure within the Greensands area while preparing the site for future public realm improvements.
Stage 2: Nith Avenue
June 2027 to October 2027
Key activities include:
- removal of existing walls and site preparation works
- construction of flood walls and retaining walls
- reconstruction of roads and footpaths
- creation of new parking bays
- installation of lighting, cycle facilities and street furniture
- refurbishment of existing benches and railings
- landscaping works, including new trees, hedges and wildflower planting
- completion of final finishing works and opening of improved public spaces
A long-term investment in Dumfries
The Whitesands Project remains a major investment in the future of Dumfries. Alongside reducing flood risk for the town centre, the project will improve public spaces, enhance access along the River Nith and create a more attractive and resilient environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
