CPR training and defibrillators in schools

A guide to how our schools in our region teach essential Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills to help save lives and which schools have a defibrillator on their premises.

Why CPR training matters

Knowing what to do in a cardiac emergency can save a life. CPR skills help children and adults recognise when someone is in cardiac arrest, call for help quickly and begin CPR until emergency services arrive. Early action can triple someone’s chance of surviving.

Even very young children can learn how to call 999 and get help.

What schools are doing

As part of the CARe Zone programme, we encourage all schools in Dumfries and Galloway to offer CPR training for pupils and staff. This training helps build confidence, life‑saving skills and awareness from Primary One onwards.

Check a school’s CPR training

We publish a map to show:

  • which schools have a defibrillator on their premises
  • which schools have completed CPR training in the past two years
  • the level of training delivered
  • where further support may be needed

Schools provide this information through a regular survey. The map is updated when schools tell us about new training and refreshed fully every two years.
