Greensands trees and the future environment
We recognise how important the Greensands area is to the community, including its trees and natural environment, and we understand that changes to this space are of significant interest.
As part of the project design, a detailed arboricultural assessment was carried out to consider the condition, quality and long-term suitability of trees across the site.
The majority of trees will be retained wherever possible, including mature species such as sycamore, ash, lime, horse chestnut and willow, which contribute to the character of the riverside.
However, around 20 trees will require removal to allow construction of the flood protection scheme and associated improvements. These are generally smaller or lower-quality trees, or those whose location conflicts with new infrastructure.
Importantly, the project will result in more trees overall at Greensands. Replacement planting will include more mature trees, alongside enhanced landscaping to improve biodiversity and strengthen the riverside setting.
All work will be carried out in line with ecological surveys and environmental guidance, including measures to protect wildlife such as nesting birds.
This scheme will not only reduce flood risk but also create a more attractive, sustainable and resilient public space for the future.
