Bat surveys at Whitesands: what’s happening and why it matters
If you live near the Whitesands, you may recently have received a letter from us about upcoming bat survey work at your property. We know this kind of request can raise a few questions, so we wanted to take a moment here on our new project blog to explain what’s happening, why the surveys are important and what you can expect over the next few months.
Why are bat surveys part of the Whitesands Project?
As part of the Whitesands Flood Protection and Public Realm Improvements Scheme, we’re required to understand how local wildlife might be affected before construction begins. Earlier surveys suggested that bats may be present in the area, and because they are a protected species, we must gather detailed information to make sure we’re meeting all environmental obligations.
That means checking potential roosting spaces and collecting acoustic data during the winter hibernation period. These surveys help us design and plan construction in a way that safeguards local bat populations.
What exactly will the surveys involve?
Environmental specialists from Jacobs will be carrying out three short visits to selected properties between January and March:
Visit 1 – January
Surveyors will carry out a quick visual check through some premises' loft hatch and install a small ultrasonic detector.
The detector records bat sounds only, not conversations or household noise.
Visit 2 – February
A short follow‑up to refresh batteries, check for signs of bats and download any recorded data.
Visit 3 – March
Removal of the equipment once monitoring is complete.
Each visit is brief and surveys are completely non‑intrusive.
