Funding Available for Active and Sustainable Travel Projects

Community groups, charities, social enterprises and public sector bodies are invited to submit Expressions of Interest for the 2026–2027 People and Place Fund, supporting projects that encourage active and sustainable travel for everyday journeys.

Administered by SWestrans and supported by Transport Scotland, the fund offers financial support for projects that make walking, wheeling or cycling and other sustainable travel options - such as bus travel and car-sharing - more accessible.

Currently funded projects range from smaller local activities like the Heathhall Treasure Hunt walking challenge to region-wide projects like the iBike project, delivered by the Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust. This project has helped local people build confidence through group rides and training sessions, making walking wheeling and cycling a practical and enjoyable option for everyday journeys.

Active travel also plays an important role in improving health and wellbeing. The Active Lives Pathway programme - designed by Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership, with significant input from SWestrans - recently won a national award for its innovative approach to connecting active travel with health outcomes.

Funding Details and How to Apply

A proportion of the fund will be ring-fenced for local community-led projects, with a limit of £25,000 per application. Larger grants are also available for region-wide projects.

Expressions of Interest are welcome for both funding streams and should be submitted to [email protected]. The proposal should take up no more than one page of A4 and include a breakdown of costs.

For community projects, this stage is intended to start a conversation about how SWestrans can support the development of strong applications.

Please note: before completing an application, an Expression of Interest must be submitted. Applications will open on 15 December and close on 25 January 2026.
