Taxi and private hire licensing

You must have a licence to operate a taxi or private hire business, or to drive a taxi or private hire vehicle.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles

Taxi and private hire car drivers are required, by law, to meet certain accessibility related duties in order to ensure disabled people can access taxi services with the same freedom, choice, dignity and ease as others. Find out how to ensure you meeting the accessibility requirements.

Exemption from mobility assistance duties

Drivers can ask us for exemption from mobility assistance duties (whether your vehicle is on the designated list or not).

We will decide whether it is appropriate to do so:

  • on medical grounds
  • on the grounds that the driver's physical condition makes it impossible or unreasonably difficult for them to comply with these duties

We do not charge for this exemption, but if a medical report is required to support an application the applicant must pay for this.

The driver of a taxi or private hire vehicle is only exempt from mobility assistance duties if the following conditions are met:

  • an exemption certificate issued to the driver is in force
  • an exemption notice is displayed in the vehicle

Send us a completed application form if you want to apply for an exemption certificate.
