The roof is above the leisure pool with the pirate ship and children’s slides.
DG1 – including the leisure pool – remains open and safe to use.
Inspections have identified problems with the roof. We propose replacing it to address them.
DG1 is an important leisure facility for people across our region. We know customers will want to understand the work and what it means for their visits.
The proposed work involves removing the existing roof and parapet, the low wall around its edge. These will be replaced with a new roofing system.
We have already sought early interest from suitably experienced and qualified contractors. The next step will be to invite tenders for the work.
Work is expected to start in summer 2027. The detailed programme will be agreed once a contractor has been appointed, so we will confirm the expected completion date at a later stage.
The leisure pool with the pirate ship and children’s slides will close temporarily when work starts. Until then, it will remain open as normal. We aim to keep disruption to a minimum and keep the main pool, training pool, sports hall and fitness areas open wherever possible throughout the work.
We are still planning the detail of the work. We will finalise these arrangements once a contractor has been appointed. Specialist scaffolding and temporary partitions are expected to separate the work area from the rest of DG1. We will give customers and others affected advance notice of any temporary restrictions or other changes.
We have now submitted a planning application. You can view the proposals and find out how to comment through our planning webpage.
We will publish further updates on Latest News. These will include the confirmed timetable and any changes affecting customers and neighbours.
