Donations are now being accepted at any library across Dumfries and Galloway, giving costumes that have been outgrown or are no longer wanted the chance to be used again.
From 10 to 31 October, Scare, Share and Wear rails will open at Ewart Library in Dumfries and libraries in Stranraer, Kirkconnel, Lockerbie and Dalbeattie.
Families will be able to donate a costume, swap one they no longer need or simply take one from the rail to use this Halloween.
The initiative forms part of the council’s Green Halloween programme and aims to encourage reuse while making it easier for families to pass costumes on rather than throw them away.
Councillor John Campbell, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Enabling and Customer Services Committee, said:
“Most families will have had a Halloween costume that was worn once or twice and then outgrown. This is a simple way of giving those costumes another life and hopefully helping another family at the same time.
“If you have one sitting in a cupboard at home, drop it into your local library and let somebody else get another Halloween out of it.”
Councillor Ben Dashper, Vice-Chair of the committee, said:
“What I particularly like about this is that people can donate at any of our libraries, wherever they live across Dumfries and Galloway.
“The swap rails in Dumfries, Stranraer, Kirkconnel, Lockerbie and Dalbeattie then give communities across the region the chance to share and reuse what we already have. It’s straightforward, practical and hopefully a bit of fun too.”
Pre-loved Halloween costumes can be donated at any Dumfries and Galloway library now.
The Scare, Share and Wear rails will be available from 10–31 October at:

- Stranraer Library
- Kirkconnel Library
- Lockerbie Library
- Dalbeattie Library
