Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day provide an opportunity for communities to come together to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our freedoms and way of life.

Services of Remembrance and Wreath Laying Ceremonies will take place at war memorials and places of worship across Dumfries and Galloway in honour of those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and the many conflicts since then.

Wreaths will be laid at more than 100 War Memorials across Dumfries and Galloway by Elected Members of Dumfries and Galloway Council. In some locations, wreaths will be laid on their behalf by community councillors and representatives of other organisations.

Lord-Lieutenants, Vice and Deputy Lieutenants will also be laying wreaths at ceremonies across the region.

A national two-minute silence will be observed at 11am on Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November, marking the moment the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War and providing an opportunity to pause and remember all those affected by conflict.

In addition to local events, the Dumfries Festival of Remembrance will take place at Crichton Church on Sunday 1 November at 7pm. Organised by The Veterans Garden Dumfries in partnership with The Royal British Legion Scotland Dumfries and Maxwelltown Branch and supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council.  The event will feature music, readings and acts of remembrance involving veterans, cadets, community representatives and local organisations. The event is free of charge to attend and open to members of the public.

Flags will be flown at council flagpoles across Dumfries and Galloway during the period of Remembrance as a mark of respect.

Councillor Tracey Little, Convener, Dumfries and Galloway Council, said:

"Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are important opportunities for us to reflect on the courage, service and sacrifice of those who have served their country, and to honour the memory of those who never returned home.

"Across Dumfries and Galloway, communities will come together in remembrance, gratitude and respect. Whether attending a local service, observing the two-minute silence or paying tribute at a war memorial, people can play a part in ensuring that the sacrifices made by previous generations are never forgotten.

"We also recognise the continued contribution of serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families, and thank them for the role they play in our communities today."
