Dumfries and Galloway Council has appointed Charles Rocks as its new Chief Social Work Officer following a robust internal matching process.
The appointment follows the council’s agreed budget savings relating to leadership costs.
Rather than retaining two chief officer posts for Social Work Services, the council agreed to establish a single Chief Social Work Officer role reporting directly to the Chief Executive. This structure will support continued strong governance, strategic leadership and focus for social work services across Dumfries and Galloway.
Charles currently serves as Head of Children, Families and Justice Services. In that role, his remit includes Child Protection, Youth Justice, Family Support, Fostering and Adoption, and Corporate Parenting.
As Chief Social Work Officer, his responsibilities will expand to include overall management of the council’s Social Work Services Directorate.
Charles has dedicated a career of 24 years to social work, with a strong focus on leading change and advocating for vulnerable children and families. His extensive experience has shaped his understanding of the complexities within the social care system, particularly in residential childcare, where he has championed environments that foster hope, care and support.
