With temperatures dropping below zero, Dumfries and Galloway Council is urging anyone experiencing or at risk of homelessness: don’t sleep rough, emergency accommodation is available 24/7.

Don't sleep rough: emergency accommodation is always available

If you have nowhere to stay, there is always a benefit in calling. Emergency accommodation can be arranged at any time:

  • During business hours (9am–5pm):
Contact the council’s Housing Options and Homelessness Team on 0303 333 3001. You can also visit your local council office for face-to-face support. The team can provide advice and arrange temporary accommodation.
  • Outside business hours (5pm– 9am):
Call the same number, 0303 333 3001. Your call will be handled by the Social Work Out of Hours Team, who can arrange transport and emergency accommodation for the night, so no one is left sleeping rough.

Cllr Andy McFarlane, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Social Work Services Committee, said:

“With freezing conditions forecast, it’s vital that people know help is available. If you have nowhere to stay, emergency accommodation can be arranged with a simple call. Support is available round the clock, so don’t wait to get in touch and certainly don’t try to brave the weather.”

Vice Chair, Cllr John Young, added:

“Our Out of Hours team is here when help is needed most: overnight and during cold spells. The Housing Options and Homeless Team can assist with longer-term solutions during the day, but emergency options are always available. No one should be left out in the cold.”
