Business Gateway Support Helps Local Cafe Boost Footfall, Sustainability and Customer Experience

Dumfries and Galloway Council is highlighting the strong impact of its Business Gateway Service, following a series of recent success stories demonstrating the value of tailored, practical support for local enterprises.

One of the latest businesses to benefit is OakHill Cafe and Deli, located at Carsluith Castle on the A75. The rural cafe, opened in 2022, has strengthened its offer to visitors and locals by investing in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, securing a £3,000 EV Charger Grant after being signposted to funding routes through Business Gateway.

Business Gateway provided the owners one‑to‑one advisory support, guidance on business planning, HR, pricing, environmental health and access to online tools and events – support that began when the couple first relocated to Dumfries and Galloway to launch their venture.

The installation of the EV charger – combined with a recent full refurbishment, new equipment, and inclusive, locally sourced food offering – has increased footfall, given EV drivers a convenient roadside stop and contributed to wider sustainable tourism across the region.

Cllr Andy Ferguson, Chair of Economy and Infrastructure Committee, said:

“Business Gateway continues to play a crucial role in helping local businesses gain the confidence, knowledge and resources they need to thrive. This latest success demonstrates how tailored support – available right here in Dumfries and Galloway – can unlock investment, boost sustainability and help small businesses reach new customers. We are proud of the results being delivered across the region.”

Cllr Tony Berretti, Vice‑Chair of the committee, said:

“The innovation shown by businesses like OakHill Cafe and Deli reflects the entrepreneurial spirit we are fortunate to have in Dumfries and Galloway. Business Gateway’s practical, hands‑on support is enabling businesses to grow, modernise and diversify. Their work is strengthening our local economy and helping rural enterprises adapt to changing customer needs.”
