Major weather events such as the recent storms can result in an upsurge in rogue trader activity. Dumfries and Galloway Council Trading Standards has received reports from the Newton Stewart and Stranraer areas of roofers going door-to-door offering immediate repairs, which are often of poor quality.
Rogue traders are widespread and their tactics involve substandard work and high-pressure sales, targeting householders for large sums of money. Typically, rogue traders begin with small, low-cost jobs then claim additional work is necessary – ultimately demanding unreasonable fees for minimal or no work.
These traders approach homes uninvited, often appearing to be professional-looking and may offer to carry out work that is not actually required.
We would therefore urge residents who need repairs or are looking for home improvement work to follow this advice:
- never agree to contracts at the doorstep and don't agree to make any payments for goods or services on the spot
- get recommendations from friends or family, and get three quotes in writing
- check credentials, trade registrations review online confirmation before making any decisions
- get a written contract and contact details including the business address and phone number
- don’t make advanced payments – only pay for work that’s been done
- Use a Dumfries and Galloway Council Trusted Trader
