The Gatehouse Development Initiative raised an impressive £250,000 to install a Changing Places Toilet and upgrade play facilities at Garrie's Park, ensuring the park meets a high standard of accessibility and inclusivity. Additional support came from Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Play Park Renewal Fund and Coastal Benefit Fund, with over £57,000 secured in community funds.
Chair of the council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Andy Ferguson, said:
“The success of our inclusive play parks is a testament to what can be achieved when communities and the council work together. Without the willingness of local groups to partner with us, we simply wouldn’t have the resources to deliver these fantastic facilities. Partnership working has unlocked funding and expertise, ensuring every child can enjoy safe, accessible play spaces in their own community.”
Earlier this year, three other inclusive play parks opened their gates: Bell Crescent Park in Sanquhar, Central Avenue Park in Gretna and Melbourne Avenue Park in Eastriggs. Each project was developed in partnership with local organisations – Sanquhar Enterprise Company, Gretna and Rigg Community Council and Melbourne Park SCIO – ensuring facilities are tailored to the unique needs of each community.
Collectively, these four community organisations have raised over £400,000 for upgrades, with funding from sources including the Coastal Benefit Fund, Community Windpower Benefit Fund, EDF Beckburn Windfarm, developer contributions and local fundraising efforts.
Vice-Chair, Councillor Tony Berretti, added:
“These projects show the power of collaboration. By working together, a significant level of investment has been secured – and the new parks truly reflect local needs. We’re grateful to every volunteer, fundraiser and partner who has helped make inclusive play a reality across Dumfries and Galloway.”
Since 2018, nine inclusive play areas have been completed across Dumfries and Galloway, all made possible through strong partnership working. Looking ahead, five more inclusive play projects are set to progress in 2026, in Heathhall, Sandhead, New Galloway, Dalbeattie and Summerhill.
