At the recent ASSIST Facilities Management Awards, the council’s Cleaning Service was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Cleaning Award, a testament to the team’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility. This recognition reflects the success of the council’s ‘Find it Clean, Keep it Clean’ plan, which supports the region’s priority to address the climate emergency and transition to a carbon-neutral future.

The plan has introduced greener cleaning chemicals and energy-efficient equipment, ensuring that sustainability is embedded in every procurement decision. Alongside the Procurement Team, Facilities Services has replaced outdated equipment with high-performance alternatives that reduce energy and water consumption, cut maintenance costs and improve service delivery.

Key improvements include:

  • Adoption of high-powered lithium battery equipment, reducing energy use by 30%.
  • Introduction of eco-friendly vacuum cleaners made from 75% recycled plastic, with a 33% energy reduction.
  • Use of smart scrubber driers with mobile app integration for training and troubleshooting.
  • Implementation of daytime cleaning in key buildings to reduce after-hours energy use.
  • Reduction in chemical usage and landfill waste through high-tech machinery and recycling initiatives.

These efforts align with the council’s Carbon Management Plan, positioning Facilities Services as a leader in sustainable public service delivery.

Andy Ferguson, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, said:

“This recognition is a proud moment for our Facilities Management Team and the wider council. Their commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community wellbeing is truly commendable. The ‘Find it Clean, Keep it Clean’ initiative is a shining example of how we can deliver essential services while actively contributing to our carbon-neutral goals.”

In addition to the Cleaning Service’s Award, Emma Currie of Cargenbridge Primary School was named winner of the Community Focus Award. Emma’s inspiring campaign to install defibrillators in schools across Dumfries and Galloway began in 2017 and has since expanded to equip 21 schools with life-saving devices. Her work, inspired by the memory of Emma Ross, exemplifies the power of community-driven action.

Meanwhile, Carly Johnstone, Catering Manager at Lockerbie School, earned third place in the Scottish Local Authority School Cook of the Year competition. Carly impressed judges with her creativity and resilience, presenting a stunning three-course menu under challenging conditions:

  • Starter: Salmon Scotch Egg with Lemon Aioli
  • Main: Chicken and Black Pudding Roulade with Leek and Cream Sauce, Chantenay Carrots, Green Beans, and Crushed New Potatoes
  • Dessert: Cranachan Cheesecake

Her achievement showcases the culinary talent and dedication within the council’s catering services.

Tony Berretti, Vice Chair committee, added:

“These achievements reflect the dedication and forward-thinking approach of our staff. From cleaner, greener equipment to inspiring individuals like Emma Currie and Carly Johnstone, it’s clear that Dumfries and Galloway is leading the way in public service excellence. We’re proud to support initiatives that make a real difference in our communities.”
