If approved, the Communications Strategy will set out a clear vision for how the council will continue to strengthen its role as a trusted voice for Dumfries and Galloway – delivering clear, accessible and people-first communication that reflects the needs of local communities.
The strategy focusses on:
-
Clarity and trust – ensuring all council communications are open, honest and easy to understand.
-
Digital-first, inclusive communication – building on the success of the new council website and expanding digital channels while ensuring no one is left behind.
-
Consistent branding and tone – embedding the council’s Brand Guidelines, House Style Guide and communications governance framework, ‘The Way’, across all services.
-
Engagement and transparency – making it easier for residents to access information, understand decisions and get involved.
The strategy also commits to strengthening internal communication, supporting colleagues to deliver excellent services and ensuring that every message reflects the council’s values.
Councillor John Campbell, Chair of the Enabling and Customer Services Committee, said ahead of the meeting:
“Clear, trusted and people-first communication is at the heart of everything we do. This strategy strengthens how we engage with our communities, explain decisions and celebrate the achievements of our region. Whether through digital channels, social media or face-to-face, we want everyone in Dumfries and Galloway to feel connected to their council.”
Councillor Ben Dashper, Vice-Chair of the Committee, added:
“Good communication builds trust – it’s about clarity and listening. If approved, this strategy keeps us focussed on plain English, accessible formats and timely updates, using insight to keep improving. Most of all, it’s about making it easier for people to find what they need and have their say.”
Alongside the strategy, the committee will consider a new Lobbying Framework, which sets out clear guidance for officers and councillors on how to advocate for Dumfries and Galloway’s interests.
The framework ensures all lobbying is transparent, evidence-based and aligned with council priorities, supporting open and impartial engagement with MPs and MSPs representing the region.
If agreed, both documents will support the council’s ambition to be open, responsive and proactive in its communication and engagement – building trust and ensuring Dumfries and Galloway’s voice is heard at every level.
