Sally Falconer, who works at Castle Douglas ARC, noticed that the programme for Civic Week did not include any activities specifically designed for individuals with disabilities.

Determined to address the gap, Ms Falconer contacted the Civic Committee and proposed the inclusion of a boccia tournament – a sport designed to be accessible to people with a range of physical and learning disabilities.

Her proposal was warmly received, with the committee not only agreeing to include the tournament in the official programme but also providing a trophy for the event.

The tournament took place on Wednesday, 16 July, from 11am to 2pm, and drew 17 participants from across the region. Disability Sport supported the event by supplying boccia balls and a staff member to assist on the day.

The event was hailed as a success, both in terms of participation and its contribution to fostering inclusivity and strengthening community ties. Following its positive reception, the Civic Committee has confirmed that the boccia tournament will now become a regular feature of Castle Douglas Civic Week.

Cllr. Andy McFarlane, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Social Work Services Committee said:

“Sally’s initiative is a fantastic example of how our staff go above and beyond to ensure everyone in our communities feels included and valued.

“By recognising a gap and taking action, she has helped create a lasting legacy for Civic Week and set a powerful example of inclusive practice.”

Cllr. John Young, the committee’s Vice Chair, said:

“This tournament is more than just a new event; it’s a celebration of community spirit and accessibility. We’re proud to see staff like Sally leading the way in making our local events welcoming for all.”
