Register a food business

New businesses must register with us at least 28 days before they start trading. You could be fined, imprisoned (or both) for up to two years if you run an unregistered food business.

Registration is free of charge and applies to most types of food business:

  • restaurants, hotels and public houses
  • cafes
  • shops and supermarkets
  • staff canteens
  • warehouses
  • guest houses
  • catering businesses run from home, mobile or temporary premises
  • nurseries
  • dairy farms
  • harvesting shellfish
  • childminders

How to register

You must register each premises you operate with a separate registration form. Complete the registration form and send it to the address on the form.

If you have premises in more than one local authority area, each premises must be must registered with the local authority that covers the area that premises is in. 

Mobile premises operating in more than one local authority area only need to be registered with their home authority.
