Apply to film in Dumfries and Galloway

If you want to film on land or property owned or managed by Dumfries and Galloway Council then you must apply to us for permission before filming begins. This includes filming on public roads, pavements, parks and council buildings.

You don’t need permission from us to film on private land but you must have the landowner’s consent.

Before you apply

You should have the following information ready:

  • production company name
  • title of your film or project
  • contact name, email address and phone number
  • size of your crew
  • all filming locations
  • start and end dates of filming
  • a detailed filming schedule

Documents

You must provide:

  • public liability insurance certificate
  • full risk assessment

Drones

If you are using a drone you must also provide:

  • take‑off and landing location(s)
  • drone make, type and weight
  • pilot/operator details
  • operator registration certificate (ORC) number
  • CAA operational authorisation
  • drone pilot’s public liability insurance

Traffic management and parking suspensions

If your filming requires traffic to be stopped, diverted or controlled, or if you need to suspend parking, you must request separate permission from our road network team:

Permission to film does not include permission to use traffic management. These must be approved separately.

What happens next

After submitting your form:

  • your application will be reviewed
  • you may be asked for more details
  • conditions may be attached to ensure safe and responsible filming
