Report a pothole or other damage to a road or pavement

Find out how to report a problem with a road, pavement, cycle path or car park, what happens after you submit a report and how we maintain our roads.

Methods we use to repair and maintain roads

Our trained inspectors regularly inspect roads and pavements across Dumfries and Galloway.

How often we inspect a road or pavement depends on factors including:

  • the type of road or pavement
  • how busy it is
  • the level of risk to road users

Types of road repair

We use different repair methods depending on the condition of the road, the type of damage and the treatment that will provide the best value and longest benefit.

Method When we use it Purpose
Patching Individual potholes and localised areas of damage. Repairs defects and prevents them from getting worse.
Surface dressing Roads showing early signs of wear. Protects the surface from water damage and extends road life.
Micro surfacing Roads with minor cracks and surface deterioration. Seals the surface and helps prevent further deterioration.
Resurfacing Roads with larger areas of wear or damage. Replaces the road surface and provides a long-term improvement.
Carriageway strengthening Roads with structural damage beneath the surface. Rebuilds and strengthens the road before a new surface is applied.

What to expect during roadworks

Depending on the work being carried out, we may use:

  • temporary traffic signals
  • road closures
  • diversion routes
  • temporary speed restrictions
  • lane restrictions
  • parking restrictions

We aim to complete repairs as safely and efficiently as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

Follow all temporary signs, speed restrictions and diversion routes while work is taking place.
