Animal health and welfare

Dumfries and Galloway Council have two dedicated Animal Health and Welfare Officers that sit within Trading Standards under the Community Protection Service.

Trading Standards enforce legislation that protects farmed animals which ultimately helps the integrity of the human food chain.

Key functions carried out by our Animal Health and Welfare Officers include: -

  • identification and traceability
  • welfare
  • carcases
  • disease control

If you have any concerns or queries, our Animal Health and Welfare Officers can be contacted by telephone 030 33 33 3000 or email [email protected].

We work closely with our colleagues in the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Scottish Government Rural Payments and Inspections Directorate to ensure the needs of the farmed animals within Dumfries and Galloway are protected.

We also play a key role in legislation covering the use and storage of animal feed on behalf of Food Standards Scotland.  Approvals and registrations can now be found/applied for using the following link: Registration and approval of feed businesses | Food Standards Scotland.  Any concerns for animal feed should be reported directly to Food Standards Scotland via [email protected]

Please note the welfare of domestic animals, such as cats and dogs, should be reported directly to the Scottish SPCA on there helpline: 03000 999 999.

Trading Standards also licence on behalf of The Council businesses carrying out animal related activities.
