Engagement on the Dumfries and Galloway Litter Prevention Strategy

We would like to understand your views on litter prevention and litter reduction across the region to inform the future Dumfries and Galloway Litter Prevention Strategy and Litter Reduction Action Plan.

Why we are engaging

We want to ensure that all stakeholders' views are appropriately considered in local and national context so Dumfries and Galloway can become a litter free region within a circular economy that can reduce, recycle and reuse unwanted materials.

In line with the national Litter and Fly Tipping Strategy, our council seeks to reduce litter and fly tipping, allowing us to:

• value and enjoy our built and natural environment and protect and enhance it for future generations
• reduce the local and global environmental impact of our consumption and production
• ensure our public services are high quality, continually improving, efficient, and responsive to local people's needs
• live in well-designed, sustainable places where we can access the amenities and services we need

Feedback we receive will inform the future Dumfries and Galloway Litter Prevention Strategy and Litter Reduction Action Plan.

What we will do

We will

• ask citizens to provide their feedback through an online questionnaire (hard copies available within Customer Service Centres and key community facilities)
• invite key groups to meet and discuss, capturing the views from the discussions
• provide the opportunity for citizens and groups to meet with us online across all four areas of our region
• engage with the business community to seek their views, including haulage firms
• provide the opportunity for councillors to attend a members seminar
• liaise with national partners and benchmark with other local authorities

• Nithsdale - Wednesday 14 May, 6.30pm to 7.30pm​​
• Stewartry - Monday 19 May, 6.30pm to 7.30pm​​
• Wigtownshire - Wednesday 21 May, 6.30pm to 7.30pm​
• Regional - Saturday 24 May, 2pm to 3pm

This survey will close at 5pm on Sunday 8 June 2025. 

Our Community Assets Team will review all feedback received from the questionnaires and various focus groups. This information will be included in a report to the Economy and Infrastructure Committee in February 2026.
